🎤 Zarna Garg's question to redefine style

Lately I can't get enough of the comedian Zarna Garg. Her videos are constantly showing up in my feed and I love sharing them with friends.

I can relate to her on many levels from stepping back from work to focus on family to rediscovering career goals past 40 to even our shared parenting flex of requiring our kids to do math every summer.

And we both agree on this......

I recently discovered Zarna’s memoir “The American Woman: one in a billion” and was thrilled to see her views on personal style change over the years. In the past, style wasn't important and she acknowledges that while her husband dressed like a star, she looked like his housekeeper.

Returning luxury gifts from Bergdorf’s because she didn’t want to waste his valuable money.

This lack of interest in her style was based on the mindset she was raised with, “the only way a woman could add value is by NOT taking up space”.

It wasn’t until Zarna started doing stand up that she started to feel oddly visible. That's when her search for her identity took shape.

She wondered which celebrities had a brown and curvy body and whose style she could emulate.

Was it Salma Hayek or Reese Witherspoon?

But her proportions were different and what they wore looked completely different on Zarna.

It wasn’t until she asked herself this question, that things started to click.

What would it look like if I could design my outfit from scratch?

She wanted to feel comfortable, confident, professional and look like an indian.

She determined a cotton kurta pajama set with a belt would be the ideal outfit.

When she first wore this to a show, she felt alive in her own body. She felt like herself.

This onstage outfit became a signature look that was in alignment to her personal brand.

My answer would be a pair of high waisted pants, with the most exquisite printed top and a beautiful pair of Jimmy Choo’s. Adorned with gold bangles and a handful of cocktail rings.

I love feeling glamourous and comfortable.

So tell me what would it look like if you could design your outfit from scratch Reader?

Imagine yourself onstage, what would you be wearing.

Describe every element of this outfit and write it down.

Now you have a vision of what your future style could be.

This is the foundation of style development.

So before you water down this image with Amazon prime sales and Nordstrom anniversary, remember Zarna's words:

"How you feel on the inside shows up on the outside. But how you dress on the outside also affects the inside.

Don’t underestimate the power of grooming yourself, dressing well and projecting success."
