Last week I filmed a podcast for a community of divorced women and the topic I spoke about was "rediscovering what looks + feels good after divorce". It got me thinking about life transitions and personal style.
Have you ever noticed how life transitions show up in your closet?
You step into a new role at work, celebrate a milestone birthday or simply feel yourself changing—and suddenly, the outfits that used to feel like “you” don’t quite fit anymore. They’re fine… but they don’t match the version of yourself that you’re becoming.
You're not alone. Most of us carry pieces from our "former selves" far longer than we should.
- the sheath dress that was our go to for presentations during the 2000's
- The practical, “just get me through this season” clothes
- the sweater with the holes we can't rid of because it's so cozy
There’s nothing wrong with keeping these things—for a period of time. But if you’re getting dressed and noticing a disconnect, it may be your style nudging you to catch up with your life.
Why our style feels different during transitions
Big changes like divorce, a promotion, leaving your corporate job, starting a new business (or revamping your current one) or becoming an empty nester brings up the same question:
To answer that, try this exercise:
- Let go of one piece that feels tied to a past version of you. (i.e: That shirt you never wear? The dress that reminds you of a role you’ve outgrown?) Letting it go is symbolic.
- Add one new piece that makes you excited about where you’re headed. Maybe it's a new pair of chocolate suede boots that make you feel sexy, a blazer in a power color, or a pair of earrings that make you feel adventurous.
- Pay attention to how you feel when you wear the new piece.
Clothing is energy—it should give you a boost, not weigh you down.
Style is about embodying the version of you that’s ready to be seen. When your life evolves, your wardrobe deserves to evolve too.
Perimenopause is my current life transition. It has forced me to re-evaluate my relationships, my business, and my wardrobe. This summer we closed our membership, reimagined our service offerings and adjusted our team's roles to align better to who we're becoming.
It's scary to go through BIG changes but it's scarier to stay stuck.
If you’re feeling that gap between who you were and who you’re becoming, that’s the perfect moment to reimagine your style. I help women like you create a wardrobe that doesn’t just fit your body—it fits your next chapter.
